Problems in Deployment of Intelligence Tests in Jobs
The intelligence tests were originally designed to help the students lacking in understanding different areas of their curriculum. However, these tests, with the start of World War I initially and the World War II predominantly, became permanent feature of selection in army. With the passage of time, they are considered the main psychological tools to measure your intelligence and predict your future success and failure.
However, the facts prove otherwise. There are certain limitations which must be considered not only be the employers but also the testers and interpreters of the intelligence tests.
What is Intelligence?
Go to any quality search engine and search for definition of intelligence. You would be surprised to know that every turned up page shall give a different definition for the same entity. Even the psychologists have failed to reach on agreement upon the meanings of intelligence. The psychological testing industry is developing new tools every day to measure your intelligence. When you ask them about meanings of intelligence, they try to simplify things by saying that whatever their developed intelligence tests measure is intelligence.
You cannot go anywhere with such kind of definitions of intelligence. You can argue that when the testing industry doesn’t have any specific definition of intelligence, how can they measure the same.
But intelligence tests are the only known tools so far to measure your fitness for a job.
Intelligence Test Results VS Success
The psychologists interpret your future success by following your results. You know intelligence tests are used in the educational institutions throughout the world. If the intelligence test could have such a capability to measure your future success, then all children having high IQ score could go to top. But the situation is otherwise.
The studies have proven that majority of the successful people are categorized by the intelligence tests as average people. It proves at least one thing; the intelligence test score can’t provide a reliable criteria to predict your future success.
Intelligence Tests VS Emotional Stability
Furthermore, the intelligence tests are incapable to measure your depths, strengths and qualities relating to your emotional stability. They also fail to measure your ethical, social and aesthetic qualities which play very important role in development of your personality.
Intelligence Tests VS Environment
Most of the intelligence tests are built by keeping in view a constant factor ‘g’ which they believe as a constant from your birth to your death. They often follow model of intelligence which is generated from inheritance. They tend to ignore different environmental factors such as your educational background, family history, local culture and traditions. You know these environmental factors play very important roles in defining your future and success rate in different areas.
Conclusion
The intelligence tests are good tools to make comparative statements of the smartness of candidates which they were exposed to testing. However, the testers and interpreters should take a lot of precautionary measures before they predict future success of a candidate. They should use such modules which can measure maximum areas of a personality before rejecting him for a particular job.
